What did the wise men follow to find Jesus? a star

PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: Matthew 2:1-12
The Jewish nation had been waiting for the promised Messiah for years. Yet many of them missed Jesus when he actually came. One of those people was King Herod. As king of Israel, Herod should’ve been the one leading the people towards Jesus and using his platform to proclaim that the long-awaited Messiah had come. Instead, he felt threatened and became angry and jealous.

In contrast to Herod’s hostility, the wise men were eager to find and worship Jesus. They were not of Jewish descent, so they had a limited knowledge of who Jesus really was. Yet the wise men knew there was something about him they couldn’t ignore, and they didn’t want to miss out on meeting someone so distinct and special.

Formal knowledge of Jesus does not necessarily mean we know Jesus. Herod had every resource to fully understand who Jesus was but because of his pride, he saw 2-year-old Jesus as a threat, not an answer. The wise men knew only that the distinct star they saw was important and they followed it. God led them to meet Jesus, their Rescuer, face-to-face.

We may have a lot of head knowledge, but until that knowledge becomes something deeper, we’ll miss out. Does knowledge ever get in the way of knowing Jesus? What’s the difference?

The wise men teach us not to miss out on the awe and wonder of Jesus. What are some ways you can remember the awe of Jesus and the wonder of what his birth means for you?

BOTTOM LINE:

Jesus is extra special!

THE BIG PICTURE

Our preschool curriculum written for 3-5 year olds. Through exciting videos, or live teaching in the rooms, kids explore stories from the Bible each month. Beginning with Creation, and moving in chronological order throughout the year, kids learn that God is a powerful, loving, and trustworthy friend who cares about us. They learn that God sent Jesus to save the world. In a large group format, preschoolers sing and dance to worship songs, then meet fun characters and play games that introduce them to the concept of the series. After the story, kids play a Big Group Game, then transition to small group activities, designed to be led by an adult. We hope preschoolers learn through fun, and begin to understand who God is and how much he loves them.
