In this four-week, live-teaching series, kids will hear stories from the beginning of the world when everything was awesome! After that, kids will see that everything was not so awesome, because of sin. But since God is still awesome, he can work all things together for the good of those who love him.

Listen to the story from Week 3: Cain Messes Up, Genesis 4:1-16

Has God worked something bad into something good for you?

Read: Cain and Abel, Genesis 4:1-16
Cain and Abel is the story of brotherhood gone sour. Cain was entitled. He thought he was the promised son; that he deserved recognition. So much so that when God preferred Abel’s sacrifice over Cain’s, Cain’s disappointment turned quickly into spite, and burning anger, and he killed Abel. But what Cain didn’t understand, or refused to believe, is that God didn’t prefer Abel’s sacrifice, he just preferred Abel’s heart. Abel offered his sacrifice in faith. Cain did not.

It’s easy to judge Cain. We can read this story and think what an angry, resentful, and selfish man Cain was. But we’re the same way. We give out of obligation. We give from our excess. But how many times do we give when it’s costly—a true sacrifice.

And, like Cain, it’s difficult to respond well to our failure. Instead of admitting our mistakes and asking forgiveness, we get defensive and angry. We can even find ourselves resenting the selflessness of others.

Thankfully, God offers us a choice, just like he offered to Cain. We can choose humility over pride, sacrifice over selfishness. Even though Cain didn’t, we can.

Search your heart for some ways you might be more like Cain than Abel. Ask God to show you where sin might be crouching at the door.

Does it empower you to choose what is right when you remember that as a believer in Jesus, God’s Holy Spirit lives inside you?

“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God,” Romans 8:28.

Our Elementary curriculum is written for 1st through 5th graders. Through exciting videos, or live teaching in the rooms, kids explore stories from the Bible each month. Beginning with Creation, and moving in chronological order throughout the year, kids learn that God is our Creator, his son Jesus is our Savior, and he is loving, healing, miraculous, and personal. Kids learn about baptism, how to pray, how they can be more like Jesus, and how they can help others. In a large group format, elementary kids sing and dance to worship songs, then meet fun characters and play games that introduce them to the concept of the series. After the story, kids transition to small group activities, designed to be led by an adult. We hope elementary kids learn through interactive content, and begin to grow in their understanding of who Jesus is and how to follow him.
